- This trip travels to the remote Outback of South Australia. There will be extended periods of time with no phone reception. Choices of where to eat will be limited and not all dietary needs may be able to be met. Road conditions may be affected by weather such as rain, extreme heat or wind particularly from Coober Pedy and on the Oodnadatta track. Your leaders will check forward conditions in Coober Pedy and make alternative arrangements if the road conditions are not safe for our vehicle to continue. We may need to backtrack from Coober Pedy to Port Augusta. Please also make sure you have access to your emergency funds in case this is needed.
- This trip includes time spent travelling in a private vehicle with your group. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. It's all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
- Departures during summer months can expect extreme heat. You will need to be well prepared with sun protection, including wearing light, long sleeves and carry at least 2 litres of water at all times when out exploring. Our vehicles are air conditioned, but even this may struggle at higher temperatures. In hotter months we may have earlier or adjusted departure times to beat the heat, rest at our accommodation during the hottest hours of the day and then explore again in the late afternoon/early evening. On the other hand, winter nights in the Australian Outback can be very cold. You may want to bring a warm jacket, a beanie and perhaps even gloves and a scarf. The days will be cool but perfect for exploring the region. Please choose your departure date carefully and make sure you are aware of the conditions. Some sites, restaurants, cafes, tours and attractions may be closed during the off season summer months.
- If you are keen to keep exploring South Australia's highlights, you might like to consider the Kangaroo Island Short Break Adventure or the Kangaroo Island Adventure.
All countries require a valid passport (with a minimum 6 months validity).
Contact your local embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date visa requirements, or see your travel agent.
It is your own responsibility to have the correct travel documentation. Visa requirements for your trip will vary depending on where you are from and where you are going.
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory on this trip.
We recommend packing:
- Lightweight clothing. You will need to bring a mixture of lightweight clothing and layers. Long shirts and pants are useful to protect against the harsh Australian sun. Clothes should be easy to wash and dry. Remember that this is a camping trip, so the clothes you wear should be comfortable.
- Comfortable, closed-in shoes. These will help to protect your feet from cuts and scratches when walking through bush/grasslands and will act as a protective barrier in the rare case of a bite or sting. A pair of sandals or thongs/flip flops are great for the beach and for around the campsite.
- Sun protection. Wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses.
VALUABLES
Try to avoid bringing unnecessary valuables and use your hotel safe. It's also a good idea to purchase a money belt or pouch that is easily hidden. The Operator strongly recommends that you photocopy all important documents, e.g. air tickets, passport, vaccination certificate, etc. and keep the copies separate from the originals. While not valid, a photocopy makes it much easier to obtain replacements if necessary.
WATER BOTTLE
Please bring your own water bottle to refill along the way. Although it can be difficult to avoid bottled water when travelling, please use the water dispensers which are provided on some of the vehicles and at some of the accommodation. Your leader will advise whether tap water is safe to drink in your destination, and if it is, you can simply refill with tap water. When unable to avoid bottled water, buying the largest available and distributing it into your smaller bottle for the day is better. If you are walking or trekking as part of your trip, you will need to carry at least 2L of water with you.
Due to limited vehicle space and strictly enforced road laws regarding weight limits, your main piece of luggage must be soft-sided and weigh no more than 15kg/33lb. You can also bring a day pack/bag to carry water, a camera, sunscreen, etc. when you're exploring during the day. Please note that The Operator is unable to carry large suitcases, particularly hard/externally framed suitcases, as they are difficult to store and can damage equipment and other travellers' belongings.
Accommodation includes 1 night in a hotel, 4 nights in a cabin, 2 nights in a underground hotel, and 2 nights in a resort.
While travelling, you'll experience the vast array of wonderful food available in the world. Your group leader will be able to suggest restaurants to try during your trip. To give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat, generally, not all meals are included in the trip price. This also gives you more budgeting flexibility. As a rule, the groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. If you have dietary requirements and/or food allergies, please let your booking agent know prior to departure.
DIETARY REQUIREMENTS
Australia eats multi-culturally. Everything from meat pies to ramen, tacos, curries, rice and pasta are part of the national diet. Vegetarians and vegans are well-catered for in Australia, and most restaurants and cafes will have a good selection of vegetarian meals. Gluten and lactose-free diets are also well-catered for. However, because this trip travels to the remote Outback of South Australia, the choices of where to eat will be limited, and not all dietary needs may be able to be met.
